Pencil Artist of the Week: Andrew Joseph
This week’s featured artist is Andrew Joseph, a pencil artist from Canada who creates highly detailed drawings using a a variety of different tools and techniques. Through creative perspectives, drawing techniques and styles, Andrew’s drawings form a gallery that is diverse, yet cohesive, something that is no easy feat for an artist at any level.
Andrew primarily uses Derwent pencil crayons, Prismacolor color pencils and Pentel ballpoint pencils for his drawings, though he has also been known to use Eagle, Faber-Castell and Laurentien color pencils. He creates all of his drawings, regardless of medium, on watercolor paper. Watercolor paper is typically thicker and less absorbent than standard paper, allowing for crisp lines with little to no bleeding or smudging.
Andrew takes full advantage of this watercolor paper property by using techniques that require an astonishing amount of accuracy. One particular technique Andrew employs in his drawings is the use of tightly drawn circles of varying colors in place of traditional shading. This technique gives Andrew’s drawings a textured look that adds a touch of uncanniness to his works.
