Pencil Artist of the Week: Oleshnikova Anastasia

Pencil Artist Oleshnikova Anastasia

This week’s featured artist is Oleshnikova Anastasia, a pencil artist from St. Petersburg, Russia who creates drawings of motorcycle stunt riders. Oleshnikova’s style is inspired by Makoto Endo, a Japanese artist who draws and paints with chopsticks, but she uses more traditional tools to create her drawings.

Oleshnikova uses Koh-I-Noor graphite pencils ranging from 2B to 8B in hardness. For her larger drawings, she uses 2B and 3B pencils for the foundation work and 8B pencils for the finishing work. For smaller drawings, she uses 5B and 7B pencils for the foundation and finishing. Regardless of the drawings size, she likes to work on thick 180gm paper.

Oleshnikova is inspired by her husband, who is a motorcycle stunt rider himself. Her drawings feature a combination of dark swatches of graphite and peppered dots of graphite, giving them an almost ink-based look. She hopes to begin working with Faber-Castell color pencils in the near future, and I can’t wait to see how her style translates to color.
