Pencil Artist of the Week: Jake Sumbing

This week’s featured artist is Jake Sumbing, a graphite and ink artist from the Philippines who creates comic spreads for some of his favorite characters.

Jake uses graphite and ink (the usual suspects) to create his drawings, but the method he delivers them onto the page is a bit out of the ordinary. Instead of wood-cased pencils and pens, Jake uses a 0.1mm clutch pencil and 0.2 mm brush. His graphite grades of choice are HB and B, and his ink of choice is black India ink.

Jake’s drawings feature characters from the Marvel comic universe, including Doctor Strange, Spiderman and Wolverine. Jake assumes the roles of both penciler and inker, and his drawings feature the deep blacks and crisp lines that are the hallmark of a professional comic book illustrator.
