Pencil Artist of the Week: “Rieven”
This week’s featured pencil artist is Vanessa, a pencil artist from Portugal who signs her work as “Rieven.” Vanessa creates hyper-realistic pencil drawings using a variety of tools from a number of different brands, including Faber-Castell, Derwent, Tombow and more. Vanessa was kind enough to give us a detailed list of the tools she uses to create her breathtaking drawings:
“Faber-Castell graphite pencils, a Derwent electric eraser, Tombow Mono Zero Elastomer Eraser (this eraser comes in various shapes like squares that I use a lot for hair), Derwent blenders, Gelly Roll 08 Sakura white pen, Derwent dotting tool (I use it for texturing the paper), Derwent Electric sharpener, and Faber-Castell metallic sharpener.
As for papers, I vary, but any kind of drawing paper, usually 165gr. One of the brands I use most is Canson.”
Vanessa’s gallery is filled with finished drawings as well as work in progress pieces. Seeing a simple graphite skeleton transform into a fleshed out, hyper-detailed drawing is both inspiring and astonishing.

This art is amazing! I’m not much of an artist so you can imagine how envious I am. Really incredible art, great job.
