Pencil Artist of the Week: Stuart Clark
This week’s featured pencil artist is Stuart Clark, a pencil artist from the UK who specializes in creating large-scale, life-like, highly-detailed portraits of people and animals. We actually discovered Stuart on our Facebook page, where he shared one of his latest portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Stuart has captured everyone from John Lennon to Matt Bellamy of Muse in graphite form, and he does so with a striking level of accuracy using a variety of different techniques.
Most of Stuart’s drawings are drawn using the dark lines of the graphite to define the shape of the drawing. Some of his drawings, however, use what we refer to as “negative drawing,” using white and the absence of color to define his subjects. Many of his drawings use both of these techniques in tandem to create images with realistic lighting and shadows while showing the skill and expertise of the artist.
It’s difficult to choose a favorite when every portrait is so finely crafted, but I would have to agree with his fans on Facebook that “Weeping Angel” is one of his best works. The sharp detail of the angel in the foreground, contrasted with the blurred focus of the background makes for a drawing that is a feast for the eyes. Couple that with the fact that it looks like Stuart is drawing with a Blackwing 602 in one of the images, and we have a winner.
