Pencil Artist of the Week: Rodolfo Cortez Jr.

This week’s featured pencil artist is Rodolfo Cortez Jr., a self-taught pencil artist who goes by the handle Sumo0172 on DeviantArt.  Rodolfo’s Café Press shop features the headline “The Pencil Rules,” a statement we enthusiastically agree with, and a statement that applies to Rodolfo’s pencil drawings as well.

Rodolfo’s DeviantArt gallery is filled with his own character designs, interpretations of comic book and video game characters, and the occasional portrait. Regardless of the subject, all of Rodolfo’s drawings feature his distinct style, a style that becomes more and more defined as you trace his drawing history through his portfolio.

Rodolfo’s tool of choice is the Pentel CLICK 0.5 PD275 JAPAN 9G Mechanical Pencil. We generally feature artists who use woodcased pencils, but Rodolfo achieves such a fine level of detail with his mechanical pencil, we’ll let it slide just this once.
