Pencil Artist of the Week: Brad Tabar
This week’s featured pencil artist is Brad Tabar, or Dokkalfr if you follow him on DeviantArt. Brad creates pencil drawings that are, in a word, fantastic, in both quality and subject matter.
Brad’s DeviantArt gallery is divided into seven categories: “Scandinavian and Teutonic Myth and Folklore,” “British Islander Folklore,” “General European Folklore,” “World Folklore and Mythology,” “Eastern European Folklore,” “Mediterranean and Southwest European Myth and Folklore,” and “Horror Art” (noticing a trend yet?). Each folder is filled with images of subjects that range from werewolves and banshees, to Jimmy Squarefoot and Lady Midday.
Brad uses a combination of pencils including Prismacolor Turquoise pencils (2b to 4b), Sanford Turquoise pencils (2b to 4b), Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils (2b to 4b), Utrecht drawing pencils (2b to 5b) and .05mm Alvin Draft/Matic mechanical pencils.
I’m a huge fan of mythology and folklore (I still have my high school copy of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology lying around somewhere), so this is right up my alley. I spent a solid hour diving into Brad’s gallery and researching the creatures hidden within. It’s like a crash course in cryptozoology.
Brad was kind enough to share some unpublished pieces with us. At the time of this writing, none of these images are published on his DeviantArt gallery, but I encourage you to go explore his profile to see all of the amazing work he’s published.
