Pencil Artist of the Week: Yann Gobart
This week’s featured pencil artist is Yann Gobart, a pencil artist from France who creates mixed media drawings of pop culture icons. Yann uses a combination of pencils, digital tools, paints and non-traditional materials to create his finished works, which are unlike anything I’ve ever seen.
Yann was kind enough to give us some insight into his creative process:
“My tools are… Miscellaneous!
[I use] graphite (H, HB, B) for the beginning of the portrait. I make a scan of my drawing, and after, I work on the textures with Photoshop. Then, I print the whole drawing in high definition on a big canvas (75cmX100cm).
To finish, I rework the entire drawing with paint (acrylics, gouache), essentially in black and white, because that conveys poetry and a kind of timelessness in these portraits of pop légends… Sometimes I stick materials to the finished product (gold or silver leaves for example…).”
I can’t get enough of Yann’s work. I especially love his portrait of Marilyn Monroe. The gold leaves accent the piece beautifully, and give it a glamorous look that calls back to the golden age of Hollywood.
