Pencil Artist of the Week: Wolfgang Burgmayr
This week’s featured pencil artist is a painter, illustrator and pencil artist from Germany named Wolfgang Burgmayr. Wolfgang enjoys “the challenge of trying different styles and different fields,” and this readiness to experiment with different mediums is apparent in his DeviantArt gallery.
Wolfgang uses graded graphite pencils ranging from 2B to 8B to create his drawings. He also uses charcoal and chalk to give his drawings added depth and shading. His inclination towards soft materials gives his work a dark, blended look, and allows him to use brushes to blend, smear, and shade his drawings.
The focus of these drawings is often elements of the human form. Eyes, skeletal anatomies and gesture trainings populate his gallery and show off his ability reproduce the human form on both a macro and micro level. Though the drawings are grounded in reality, they are realized in Wolfgang’s distinct style. It is a style somewhere in between realism and caricature that emphasizes the defining traits of a subject without delving into cartoony territory.
