Pencil Artist of the Week: Monica Bouman

This week’s featured pencil artist is Monica Bouman, a pencil artist from the Netherlands. Monica taught drawing and painting to primary school students for a number of years before being inspired to create her own original pencil works, and she has been creating gorgeous color pencil drawings ever since.

Monica creates all of her drawings with a style that is distinctly her own. Many of her drawings have an “unfinished” look to them, with portions of the drawing left uncolored, lines left unfinished, and shading left half done. The results are not unfinished drawings, however, but drawings that are fluid, blending from paper, to graphite, to color, and back again.

This unique style allows the viewer to trace Monica’s creative process from the underlying graphite skeleton to the final blended color finish. It also makes her subjects appear to come alive on the page as the graphite, wax and paper come together to create the final image.
