Pencil Artist of the Week: Cheryl Chapman
I attended an event Saturday evening in my hometown (Fort Wayne, Indiana) called “Drop Your Avant Garde,” a night combining local bands, art, food, and drink downtown. Often times it showcases artists who aren’t as well known in the community.
A local gallery, Continuum Gallery, which was taking part in the event, displayed work by an abstract pencil artist named Cheryl Chapman. Her art brought in a medium not used often in abstract art: pencil! She combined graphite with the usual paint swirls, blotches, and strokes.
The graphite seemed to give a bit more form to the colors — rather than a freeform combination of colors and strokes, we can pick out a few more concrete shaped and levels in the art.

Cheryl does not seem to have a website where I can find her work, but if I can find it, I’ll post it here. If I ever run into her (it’s a small community here in Fort Wayne), I’ll ask her what her pencil of choice is!
