Pencil Artist of the Week: Denis Chernov
This week’s featured pencil artist is Denis Chernov, an artist living and working in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He works in a number of different mediums, including paints and charcoals, but his favorite artistic tool is the graphite pencil, which he uses to create landscapes, portraits, architectural studies, and illustrations with breathtaking skill.
Denis describes his tool of choice as more of a tool of necessity in his creative process: “[the] pencil, it transpires, makes a perfect tool in the artist’s quest of the paths of the boundless beauty in all its manifestations, be it a lonely tree if not a single branch or a panoramic landscape.”
Denis’ works show a mastery of negative space, shadows, shading, and every other graphite drawing technique imaginable. Each drawing possesses photograph-like realism but, upon further inspection, the viewer can see the texture and movement of the graphite. This is the sign of a true pencil artist.
