Pencil Artist of the Week: Robbie Wild Hudson
This week’s featured pencil artist is Robbie Wild Hudson, a pencil artist who splits his time between Berlin and the Lake District in England. Robbie has exhibited his work in the UK, Canada, and Turkey and, after taking one look at his gallery, it’s easy to see why.
Robbie’s style features a combination of geometric and traditional elements that give his drawings an almost surreal feel. At first glance, his drawings seem sporadic but, upon further inspection, it becomes apparent that they are very deliberate.
Robbie was kind enough to give us some insight into his creative process, and why he chose the pencil as his tool of choice:
“I use a journey as a structural core for my drawings and build up each artwork slowly over many months by adding to it bit by bit. These journeys take different forms, from road-trips along the coast of the Black Sea in Turkey, treks in the Himalayas and Atlas mountains to seven-mile swims in the Cumbrian Lakes.
I enjoy the way that a simple set of aesthetic rules can be applied to these experiences of moving through a place or a landscape, and how this creates an artwork that represents this movement.
Everything that finds its way into my drawings is related to a particular road trip, walk or a swim. I use pencil because I find it levels any sense of hierarchy or importance any single image may have over another. The content is flattened to the same monochromatic level and then I can try to make sense of it.”
