Pencil Artist of the Week: C-Compiler

C-Compiler Drawings

This week’s featured pencil artist hails from Germany and goes by the handle C-Compiler on DeviantArt (or just “Compiler” as she signs her notes). Her DeviantArt profile is filled with drawings of dinosaurs, both traditional and digital.

For her traditional drawings, Compiler uses a full range of graphite grades:

When it comes to make fully-shaded drawings like the following one I dubbed “Two Allosaurs,” I use my set of Faber-Castell’s Castell 9000 pencils. For this drawing I made use of the degrees ranging from HB (medium-hard) to 8B (soft, ideal for dark shadows).

Some of her most interesting drawings, however, feature hand-drawn subjects placed in a digital setting. Compiler discussed this interplay between the worlds of analog and digital in a note to the Pencils.com team:

Nowadays, I’ve become fond of combining my paleo sketches with the advantages of my preferred software for doing my digital paintings called Gimp. It’s quite interesting to see how your own, maybe rough, sketches can look on a digitally created background that mimics a particular structure like old paper or stone as you can see on my recent sketch of the Tyrannosaurus from Jurassic Park. It’s a far better method to make such sketches beautiful instead of showing them on a plain white background.

Compiler is currently working on a theme park simulator in the vein of Zoo Tycoon titled Prehistoric Kingdom. You can see concept art from the game in her DeviantArt gallery and read more about the game on its official website.
