Pencil Artist of the Week: Jude Robinson
This week’s featured pencil artist is Jude Robinson, a painter, pencil artist, and all around inspirational person we discovered through Twitter. Jude has always had an interest in the arts, but it seemed the universe had different ideas:
“In high school, art was my favourite subject and I was always inspired by the enthusiasm of my art teacher. I intended on furthering my art education upon leaving school but unfortunately, life took me on a different path.”
That path included 15 years working as a contract manager in the nuclear industry and several years working as a doula (a woman who supports women and their families before, during and after childbirth). After a spinal injury left her unable continue her career, however, Jude rediscovered her creativity, and has been creating fantastic works of art ever since.
Jude describes her painting style as “impressionistic with some surreal qualities on occasion.” Her drawing style takes a more realistic approach, using the blacks and grays from her pencils combined with the white space from her paper to create depth and shadows. This combination of graphite and whitespace, along with her sparing use of colors, creates a sense of tension in her drawings that immediately drew me.
If you would like to see more of Jude’s work, you can check out her website here. You can also follow her on Twitter and like her on Facebook. Jude accepts commissions, so you can even see your own image translated into graphite.
