Pencil Artist of the Week: Thiago (kikodv)
This week’s featured pencil artist is Thiago, a pencil artist from Brazil who goes by the handle kikodv on DeviantArt. Thiago’s profile features a gallery dedicated to his non-colored originals and a gallery dedicated to their digitally-finished counterparts, giving his followers a look inside his creative process.
Thiago creates his original drawings with a selection of Faber-Castell 9000 pencils ranging from 6B to HB and his trusty sketchbook. In fact, many of Thiago’s sketches are housed in the pages of his Moleskine, including the Artemis drawing seen below.
After he has finished a sketch, Thiago often scans the image to his computer and digitally colors and retouches portions of the drawing. The contrast between the rough pencil lines of the original drawing and the solid, clean swatches of digital color gives each piece a beautiful, almost abstract, look. Similar to last week’s featured artist, all of Thiago’s drawings feature a graphite skeleton beneath the surface, even if the finished product has a distinctly digital feel.
