Pencil Artist of the Week: Joanna (Blanket)
This week’s featured pencil artist is Joanna, a pencil artist living and working in Poland. Joanna started her professional career as a graphic designer, but shifted to traditional art forms after discovering her passion for drawing in the early 2000s. Since then, she has been creating amazing pencil drawings that combine elements of realism and caricature to surprising effect.

Joanna’s subjects are incredibly detailed, giving her drawings an almost tangible appearance. Her drawing of House’s Hugh Laurie, in particular, looks like it’s ready to jump off the page. Some of her subjects’ details are exaggerated, however, lending an uncanny look to her drawings that can’t easily be described.
In Joanna’s drawings, wrinkles are deeper, hair more full, features more defined, etc. These exaggerated elements, drawn with painstaking detail, result in a style of near photorealistic caricature (a seeming oxymoron) that I have yet to find in another artist’s work.
