Pencil Artist of the Week: Paul Harmon
This week’s featured pencil artist is Paul Harmon, a comic artist, doodler and toy maker living in Brooklyn. Paul usually works with nib-tipped pens, but one drawing we found on his Deviant Art profile stood out from the rest.
The drawing is a roughly sketched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Unlike most of his drawings, which are done in ink, this particular turtle is sketched in graphite. What kind of graphite? Blackwing graphite, of course.
Last April, Paul attended the Blackwing Experience at the Art Directors Club in NYC. It was there that he was introduced to the Blackwing and reintroduced to drawing with a pencil. In the caption that accompanies the deviation, Paul explains why this drawing, unlike his others, is done in pencil:
“I went to a cool, Blackwing pencil exhibit at the Art Directors guild in Manhattan, it was very close to work. It showed how the legendary pencil was made and all the amazing artists who swore by the silky smooth drawing tool. It’s very silky smooth to draw with! Don’t really draw much with pencil anymore but I love the Blackwing…”
Paul’s blog is filled with sketches, doodles, watercolor paintings and toy sculptures. Seeing Paul break down his creative process, by first showing how an idea manifests itself as a sketch and then how that sketch becomes a sculpture for his toy line, is truly impressive. Paul is gearing up to launch a Kickstarter campaign to help fund his toy line, so check back often to see how you can help out and score what are sure to be some awesome perks.

With Palomino hosting a second Blackwing Experience in Southern California next month, many more artists like Paul are sure to be reintroduced to woodcased pencils. We can’t wait to see what they create with them.
