Pencil Artist of the Week: Sam Jones
This week’s featured artist is Sam Jones, a pencil artist from the UK who creates sketches, drawings and doodles using a combination of analog and digital tools. Sam explained which tools he uses and why, and gave some insight into why he prefers analog over digital in some situations (and vice versa).
“I prefer the softer graphite Derwent pencils from 2B to 6B as they show the grain through the paper and are quick to cover dark areas of the image. Additionally, they are easier to erase than the harder pencils. Recently however I have enjoyed using a 2B & 4B mechanical pencil as, with a finer point you can achieve a greater level of detail.
I also draw digitally on a software called Manga studio 5 with a Wacom tablet, this has its advantages of being able to create artwork in a variety of media digitally free of mess and a faster process with the use of ‘ctrl + Z (undo). However using traditional media can be more relaxing.”
Below is a selection of three of Sam’s drawings: one created using pencils, one created using pens, and one created using his Wacom tablet. As you scroll through the images, notice how his style adapts to the media he is using to create the drawing.
