Sharpening Your Knowledge: Earth Day

Earth DayEarth Day

Hey there fellow pencilnauts, it’s Earth Day, and you know what that means! Actually, here at Pencils.com, we understand that many of our fellow pencil enthusiasts may not know what Earth Day is, let alone what it means. So, we have taken it upon ourselves to provide you with a bit of backstory regarding what makes this day so special and, of course, how it relates to pencils.

Unlike most holidays that are based around an important event, person or religious cornerstone, Earth Day is one based on an idea: the idea that the Earth is not something that cannot be wasted or squandered, but something that we need to preserve and protect for future generations. According to the Earth Day website, the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and marked “the birth of the modern environmental movement.” This year, we celebrate the forty-first anniversary of this day and the ideas it represents, all of which are just as pressing now as they were over forty years ago.

Everyone at Pencils.com continues to believe that we are responsible for eliminating waste, conservatively using the resources available to us and championing environmental sustainability. Our ForestChoice pencil was the first pencil to market bearing certification from the Forest Stewardship Council, “an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.”This certification means that every ForestChoice pencil is manufactured using resources that were harvested responsibly and came from verified sources. Furthermore, the California incense-cedar used in all of our pencils comes from trees that are managed on a sustained-yield basis, meaning that the mature trees are not harvested faster than the young trees are able to grow.

For you, the artist, the writer, the pencileer, this means that every time you pick up a Palomino Blackwing, ForestChoice, Golden Bear or any of our other Pencils.com pencils, you can do so knowing that it was manufactured in a responsible, sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. And, frankly, we can’t think of any better way to celebrate Earth Day.

So, what do you think of Earth Day? How are you going to celebrate? Sound off in the comments section below and, as always, keep creating.
