Pencil Artist of the Week: Darío Mekler
This week’s featured artist is Darío Mekler, a pencil artist and painter based in Argentina. Darío creates pencil-based representations of social and political issues, but it was his pencil-based interpretations of several Edgar Allen Poe stories.
The stories Darío adapted to graphite are “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart.” Each drawing features a stylized interpretation of the contents of its respective short story.
The most striking of these three drawings is his interpretation of “The Tell Tale Heart.” Much like the short story, the body buried beneath the floorboards dominates the drawing, overshadowing the rest of its contents.
Darío uses an HB pencil for sketching his drawings, and a set of pencils ranging from 2B to 8B for rending, detail and shading. His pencils of choice are Faber-Castell Castell 9000 pencils and Mitsubishi pencils.
