Pencil Artist of the Week: Marcus Collar
This week’s featured pencil artist is Marcus Collar, a comic penciler and incredibly talented pencil artist living in Napa, CA. We met Marcus at this year’s Stockton-Con, where he was exhibiting his work and promoting his upcoming series with CCP Comics. Marcus’ portfolio contains drawings of pop-culture icons, nostalgic tributes to the 1980s and characters of his own design, making a visit to his blog like a trip down memory lane.
Marcus’ style reflects the medium his drawings were created for: comics. His lines are smooth, dark, and clean, and the shading within the characters and settings is minimal. Since the penciling, inking, and coloring are all done separately (and often by three different people) in the comic world, it makes sense for the penciler to create well defined lines for the inker and leave a relatively blank canvas for the colorist.
Marcus was kind enough to share some never-before-seen drawings from his upcoming comic, which will be published by Michael Aushenker, creator of Cartoon Flophouse. Below is a first look at some of these drawings, along with some other drawings he shared with us.
