Pencil Artist of the Week: Sam Brett-Atkin
This week’s featured artist is Sam Brett-Atkin, a pencil artist from the UK who creates incredibly detailed pencil drawings of shrubs, trees and other foliage found in nature. His Woodland Wandering series, which is on display at the EightySixd coffee shop in Ironbridge, Shropshire, features a collection of studies of woodlands and plants from the surrounding area.
The drawings for the Woodland Wandering series were created using Derwent Graphic pencils. Each drawing is a monochromatic pencil study of subjects ranging from winter berries, to a footprint in the sand, to the remains of a stump. The drawings are then matted, framed and photographed, giving each piece an elegant, finished look.
Sam’s style is hyper detailed. The fine lines and even shadows in his drawings suggest that he uses an extremely sharp pencil for his line work, and slightly blunted pencil for his shading.
