Pencil Artist of the Week: PurrfectDragon

Pencil Artist PurrfectDragon

This week’s featured artist is PurrfectDragon, a pencil artist from Germany who creates delightfully simple pencil sketches. Her sketches, which she numbers and posts on her DeviantArt gallery, feature creatures and critters both real and imaginary.

PurrfectDragon was kind enough to share her tools of the trade with us:

“I use a mechanical pencil from Faber-Castell – usually [the GRIP Plus 0.7mm mechanical pencil]. It is my favorite by far – it feels nice, it fits perfectly in my hand and it is very convenient and durable so I take it with me everywhere.

Occasionally I also try my hand at coloured pencils – either Faber-Castell or Toppoint or one of the many I have amassed over the years (but nothing expensive, I’m just a Uni student after all).

Most of the time though I don’t have the patience for coloured pencils and add the colour via Gimp (or not at all).

Regarding paper I just use whatever is available at the moment – usually the same cheap paper I also use for my printer but when I’m away from home I like to use Leuchtturm1917 Notebooks in different colours.”

It takes a certain level of confidence to create and publish sketches that are as pure as the drawings in PurrfectDragon’s gallery. When a drawing is reduced to graphite and paper, it can reveal a lot about an artist. In PurrfectDragon’s case, it reveals a creator who is having fun with her tools and who has a vision for her creations.

In addition to her pencil sketches, PurrfectDragon also creates much more complex paintings and digital pieces. I particularly like her digital desktop backgrounds. You can check out these and all of her drawings on her DeviantArt profile.
