Pencil Artist of the Week: Louis Keersmaekers

Pencil Artist Louis Keersmaeker

This week’s featured pencil artist is Louis Keersmaekers, an art student from Belgium who creates graphite, charcoal and acrylic-based art. Louis prefers “sinister art that gives an eerie feeling, nothing to edgy though just something… unsettling,” and his own style matches this preference.

Louis uses a wide variety of tools when creating his drawings. For his graphite pieces, he uses Koh-I-Noor Progresso woodless pencils ranging from 4B to 8B. The dark, soft graphite gives his drawings the eerie, unsettling look he desires. He also uses Conte pastels, Winsor & Newton watercolors and acrylics, and Prismacolor charcoals to give his drawings some added depth.

Louis’ favorite visual artist is Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch. You can see Bosch’s influence in the sketchy, unsettling appearance of Louis’ work. Louis is colorblind and, as such, very few of his drawings feature any color. When he does use color, however, he does a fantastic job of balancing it based purely on the descriptions on the pencil.
