Pencil Artist of the Week: James Robertson

This week’s featured pencil artist is James Robertson. He draws storyboards at Pixar for films like Toy Story 3, so he is no stranger to the humble pencil. His personal blog, The Iron Scythe, is chock-full of character sketches, profiles, scenes, and what-have-you.

We love the free, flowing way he lays out his sketches, yet the detail in them are amazing. This coffeeshop scene is especially good. Like a real coffeeshop, it is full of different kinds of characters: young women, old academics, artists, etc.

Best of all, he did this with our Palomino Blackwings! The darkness of the lines allow him to press lightly, and the smoothness of the graphite let his hand glide faster across the page.
