Our Favorite Dr. Seuss Drawings, New Book Out This Summer

Fans of Dr. Seuss (and let’s face it, who isn’t a member of that club?) have something to celebrate! A newly-discovered manuscript by Theodor Geisel, a.k.a Dr. Seuss, is being published by Random House and will be released on July 28. The book manuscript was found by the late author’s widow. In What Pet Should I Get?, the twins from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish return to entertain generations of Dr. Seuss’s adoring fans. In honor of this exciting development, I’m going to share with you some of our favorite obscure Dr. Seuss drawings!

“Golden Girl”

A fairly classic-looking Seuss character, the Golden Girl is full of whimsy with a touch of class. I can’t decide if I want to stroke her soft-looking neck or join her for an afternoon of shopping and tea-sipping.

“Racing North to Get Cool”

A reversal of the typical “journey south for the winter” migration motif, the warm colors and soft edges create a tropical dream world to the viewer. Deep in the throes of winter, gazing on this glorious image give me hope that summer will come after all.

“Joseph Katz and His Coat of Many Colors”

This awesomely colorful drawing combines two of Dr. Seuss’s greatest artistic strengths: surrealism, and cats. If any talented knitters/tailors/seamstresses out there feel like making this coat in real cat size, I would strongly encourage my cat to wear it.

“Sunbathing Bird”

I love Surreal Seuss, but I love Silly Seuss even more. This fabulous anthropomorphic bird sunbathing on a patch of grass tickles the funny bone and makes me long for long summer days and melting ice cream cones. I wish she’d gotten her own book!

“Green Cat with Lights”

My personal favorite obscure Seuss illustration is “Green Cat with Lights.” To my mind, the green cat is a benevolent spirit of the forest, and the lights are its fairy friends. It helps that I’m writing this post by the light of a string of white Christmas lights over my bed.
