Pencil Artist of the Week: Lysaena (JelLysefish)

Pencil Artist Lysaena

This week’s featured artist is Lysaena, a pencil artist from France who is studying at the EMCA animation school. Once she graduates, Lysaena hopes to attend ENJMIN, a school dedicated to video game and other interactive digital arts.

Lysaena creates drawings inspired by the fantasy genre using a combination of mechanical pencils, graphite pencils and digital tools. In fact, she gave us a list of her tools of the trade:

“I often use 0.3 / 0.5 criterium, HB / 4B / 7B graphite pen, and water color or Liquitex acrylics for traditional drawings, and I recently discovered a very useful software called Krita which has very similar brushes to real life pencils, so I can clean my traditional drawings with it!”

Lysaena’s recent drawings feature a style is reminiscent of Yoshitaka Amano, the artist known best for his work on the Final Fantasy video game series. The best way I can describe is that they look painted (and in some cases they may be), giving her subjects a soft, delicate look.

Nice work. I really like the middle image! Very creative. I’ve been experimenting with pen and watercolor for the last few weeks and I find it highly enjoyable. Most of my artwork is done on sticky notes. I post a new sticky note drawing on my website each day. I would love to use watercolors, but due to the thin paper, I use highlighters as a substitute!
