Pencil Artist of the Week: Ced Nocon

Pencil Artist Ced Nocon

This week’s featured pencil artist is Ced Nocon, a self-taught comic penciler and inker living in Los Angeles, California. Ced has worked in the comic industry for over 19 years and has had his work published by comic giants like Marvel, DC and Image, as well as several smaller, independent publishers, including Maximum Press and Boom! Studios. Ced’s drawings can be found on everything from comic books to trading cards, but it is the work found in the pages of his notebook that is truly special.

Ced works primarily with nib-tipped pens and artist pens in his professional work but he is, at his core, a pencil artist. When I spoke with Ced, he described his love for pencils as a love of experience:

“Though I ink most of my work these days, I’ve always been–and will continue to be–a comic book penciler. And even when it comes to digital work, I still lay down the foundation work or underdrawing in pencil. So between a pencil or ink, I’m more experienced with the graphite lead than with the india ink.”

Like many comic artists, Ced has an artistic style that is unique while still being very much in tune with his medium of choice. His lines are bold and expressive while his anatomies are realistic, but with a touch of the fantastic. I particularly like the wonderful drawing of a horse and cowgirl he created in one of our Palomino Luxury Notebooks. You can check out this drawing, and more, below.
