Pencil Artist of the Week: Austin Madison
This week’s featured pencil artist is Austin Madison, an animator working at Pixar and the man behind the animation/drawing blog Austin Translation. Austin graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 2006, and he has already built a portfolio that includes animating on the films Ratatouille, Toy Story 3, Up, and Brave.
When Austin isn’t busy animating Academy Award-winning films, he runs the hilarious and inspiring blog Austin Translation. His drawing posts vary from simple doodles to elaborate web-comics, like his 10-part epic “The Imp & The Pimp,” based on the book and television series Game of Thrones. During the 2012 football season, he even produced a series of fantasy football drawings that depict the outcome of games in hilarious fashion, some of which can be purchased on his Zazzle page.
We stumbled upon Austin’s blog thanks to his quarter by quarter interpretation of the Harbaugh duel at Super Bowl XLVII. His drawing of the 3rd quarter blackout is particularly satisfying. You can check out his interpretation of all four quarters here.

If you want to see more of Austin’s work, watch Brave (seriously, it was great and Austin was the film’s lead animator) or check out his blog. What do you think Studio 602ers? Sound off in the comments section below!
