Pencil Artist of the Week: Alba Vazquez

This week’s featured artist is Alba Vazquez, a pencil artist from Spain who is working on an ambitious project titled Ante Litem. The project is an online novel published via her blog antelitem.blogspot.com.es. In addition to the novel’s chapters, her blog also features portraits of each character, which Alba has masterfully drawn to accompany her writing.

According to the blog (and my kindergarten-level Spanish), Ante Litem follows the exploits of Aurora Vignola, an ordinary girl who gets uprooted and moved to small town full of secrets. You can read the full synopsis on her blog.

Alba’s style draws heavily from the worlds of comics and cartooning. Her drawings feature strong, dark line work and subtle shading. She uses Derwent Graphic pencils ranging from H all the way to 9B for the bulk of her work, along with white pens to add detail.

Alba doesn’t limit herself to drawing characters from her novel; her DeviantArt gallery is filled with portraits of celebrities drawn in her unique style. She even has a YouTube video that showcases her drawing skills in just 1 minute and 40 seconds.
