Pencil Artist of the Week: Jennifer Maestre
This week, we are continuing last week’s theme of pencil artists that create art out of pencils rather than with them. This week’s pencil artist, Jennifer Maestre, is a pencil artist that creates pencil sculptures that are “inspired by the form and function of the sea urchin.” Her sculptures have been exhibited in galleries all across the country and feature one of the most interesting creation processes we have ever seen.
Jennifer details this creation process on her website:
“To make the pencil sculptures, I take hundreds of pencils, cut them into 1-inch sections, drill a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpen them all and sew them together.”
The result is an art form that is not only seen, but also experienced. Her sculptures look organic, yet the construction of each figure is clearly visible, creating a visual paradox that is intriguing. Some her pieces resemble ancient idols; others appear to be growing out of themselves. All in all, each sculpture is unique, and unlike anything we have ever seen.
