Pencil Shaving Jewelry by Pencil Artist Mae Alandes

,

This week’s featured pencil artist does something really special with pencils. Actually, she does something really special with pencil shavings. Yes, you read that right. Her name is Mae Alandes, and she’s a Spanish artist who specializes in making jewelry out of pencil shavings.

Mae studied jewelry at the EASD of Valencia, where she graduated in 2010. She creates everything from rings and necklaces, to pendants and hair clips out of pencil shavings, and has exhibited her work at Melting Point 2012 and has taught jewelry workshops for children during the Schmuck exhibition at the MuVIM Museum.

When describing how she started creating pencil shaving jewelry, Mae had this to say:

“One day I arrived at work where I worked as a social Integrator and a girl was sharpening all of the colored pencils. When I saw the shavings, they seemed precious to me and I thought that something so pretty could not go to waste. I researched different ways until I found how to harden them and this is the result.”

If you want to see more of Mae’s work, check out her blog or her Facebook page.
