Pencil Artist of the Week: Davide Belli

Pencil Artist David Belli

This week’s featured artist is Davide Belli, a pencil artist, illustrator and student of comic art living in Milan, Italy. Saturday was Free Comic Book Day in the United States, so I’ve been in a comic book kind of mood lately, and Davide’s drawings definitely satisfied my cravings.

Davide shared his list of preferred tools, including why he uses different tools and techniques for different drawings:

“I use many tools: pencils, pen, coulored pencils, brush pen, watercolor, acrylic color and any drawing tool that I can find. I like to experiment [with] new techniques, new mixtures to change my point of view on things, but my favourite tools [are] brush pens, pencils and watercolors.”

Davide’s style is informed by the history of the comic book medium, and the result is pure, comic-fueled goodness. Many of his drawings are static character studies, but my favorite pieces are his action-packed, fully-framed pages. In these pieces, every frame is packed with enough detail to effectively tell a visual story without there being too much detail to overwhelm the viewer. It’s a fine line, but one that Davide toes expertly. There are some instances of characters reaching over their panel frames, bending the fourth wall, but not breaking it, that I absolutely love.
