Pencil Artist of the Week: Florian Jaensch
This week’s featured pencil artist is Florian Jaensch, a pencil artist from Germany who specializes in creating portraits and time-lapse drawing videos. Florian’s DeviantArt gallery is filled with graphite, charcoal, and chalk drawings of celebrities and pop-culture icons, but my favorite of the bunch are the drawings he creates with ink. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “this is Pencils.com,” but bear with me.
Florian uses Derwent charcoal pencils for his charcoal drawings, Derwent Graphic and Faber-Castell 9000 graphite pencils for his graphite drawings, and a Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth lead holder with Cretacolor cores for his chalk drawings. He blends them with a simple tortillon (blending stump) and chamois to create the breathtaking portraits seen below. His ink drawings, however, are a different story.

Florian creates his ink portraits using a plain ballpoint pen… and that’s it. In fact, he has an entire YouTube channel dedicated to showing off his skill with this simple tool. His time-lapse videos are impressive, and show off the confidence Florian has in his abilities. There is no erasing, no going back from mistakes, and no blending. Just raw artistic talent.
If you want to see more of Florian’s drawings, you can check out his DeviantArt profile here. You can also like Florian on Facebook and subscribe to his YouTube channel for more frequent updates.
