A Look Inside the New Blackwing Packaging

Today, Palomino began shipping Blackwing pencils in their redesigned packaging, and that means we get to start shipping the new boxes to you! The new design signals a departure from the folding, carton-style box that has been used since the Blackwing’s revival in 2010, so we thought we’d take a closer look at the new Blackwing packaging.

The Feel

The new box is a two piece, set-up box that features a separate lid and base, and a smooth, almost waxy finish. The box itself is rigid, and feels as if it can be used long after the pencils have been sharpened down to nubs.

The Lid

The front of the lid features an image of the enclosed pencils, along with a clear description of the graphite performance.

The Base

The back of the base features the story of the Blackwing pencil and highlights the pencil’s Genuine Incense-cedar casing, Japanese graphite and unique design.

The Interior

The interior of the box features a hex pencil-inspired design.

I do like the box design very much. It IS a step up from the folding box. Though, I am wondering if we are paying more than the original $20 per dozen due to the box, the pencils, or something else(Japanese economy?). Yet, in the end, I have to admit that I will not stop buying the pencils; and I am more likely to give a box of them to someone as a gift.
