Pencil Artist of the Week: Stephan van den Burg

Pencil Artist Stephen van den Burg

This week’s featured artist is Stephan van den Burg, a pencil artist from the Netherlands who creates non-traditional drawings in a style that is completely his own. And the best part? He creates them entirely out of graphite.

Stephan worked with Firehose, a Blackwing pencil retailer in the Netherlands, to create an exhibition of works created entirely with Blackwing pencils. The results are unlike anything I’ve seen, so I’ll let the drawings do the talking.

Stephan’s drawings are textural, rhythmic and abstract. He makes wonderful use of white space, patterns and composition to create pieces that attempt to redefine our expectations of what a graphite drawing can, and should, be. And, for the most part, he succeeds. More than once, I found myself performing a double-take while browsing through his gallery in an attempt to understand how he was able to manipulate graphite in such a way.

If you’d like to see more of Stephan’s drawings, you can check out his Facebook page here. If you’re in the Netherlands, you can also check out his exhibition in person at Heden in Den Haag, where it will be showing from May 29th – June 27th.
