Product Profile: General’s #580 Test Scoring Pencils
This week, we’re excited to introduce the General Pencil Company’s #580 Test Scoring pencil to our selection of tools. This pencil is dubbed “The Original” test scoring pencil by General’s, so it has quite a bit to live up to.
The Graphite
The General’s #580 Test Scoring Pencil doesn’t feature a traditional graphite grade. The graphite was specially formulated for taking Scantron tests, so it lays down dark and is highly reflective. It feels a bit softer than your standard #2, but line it lays down is considerably darker than a standard #2.

The Finish
The General’s #580 Test Scoring Pencil is finished with a glossy black lacquer. The lacquer is evenly applied, creating a streak and blemish-free finish. The white imprint is consistent and pops nicely agains the black background.

The Eraser
The General’s #580 Test Scoring Pencil features a classic pink eraser set in a silver ferrule. The eraser is a bit softer than a standard pencil eraser (similar to the erasers found in General’s other products), allowing it to erase the pencil’s dark graphite.

The Wood
The General’s #580 Test Scoring Pencil is manufactured in the United States using Genuine Incense-cedar. It sharpens quickly and evenly (they even come pre-sharpened!).

The Verdict
This pencil warrants the hype. It lays down a smooth dark line, sharpens evenly, features a classic, unobtrusive finish, and comes equipped with an eraser that does its job.
