Pencil Artist of the Week: Steven G. Chipman
This week’s featured pencil artist is an artist from the United States named Steven G. Chipman. Steven creates graphite, carbon and color pencil drawings with a TON of texture, and even more character. Steven was kind enough to share the secret behind his drawings:
“My color work is a mix of Prismacolor and Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor pencils, typically on Pastelbord though sometimes on Wallis Sanded Paper or Colourfix Paper – always a sanded surface. My black and white work of late has been with carbon pencil, also on sanded surfaces.”
You can really see the effect the sanded paper has in all of Steven’s drawings. I love the way color takes to the sanded surface, leaving small dots of dense pigment to contrast the less pigmented areas. It gives all of Steven’s drawings a high-contrast look that compliments their textured nature nicely.

If you’d like to see more of Steven’s work, you can check out his DeviantArt gallery here. I especially recommend viewing his self-portraits to see the progression of his beard, which now seems to be reaching Gandolf-like lengths. You can also check out his main gallery on his website and keep up with Steven on his blog.
