Pencil Artist of the Week: Enrico Moscatelli

This week’s featured pencil artist is Enrico Moscatelli, a pencil artist from Brazil who draws his inspiration from the silver screen. His DeviantArt gallery is filled with portraits of his favorite actors and actresses that are realized with painstaking detail. Most of his portraits are traditional graphite drawings that aim to mirror the photograph they are based on. The two drawings that caught my eye, however, are much more subtle.

These drawings, one of which is a portrait of Marilyn Monroe and the other of which is a portrait of Mila Kunis, are stylized drawings of one half of each actress’ face. The images appear as if the contrast has been turned up to 11, obscuring the details of the subject’s face and, in the case of Mila Kunis, the shape of the face entirely. What is left is a drawing composed almost entirely of shadows.
