Pencil Artist of the Week: Lamin Martin

This week’s featured pencil artist is Lamin Martin, a pencil artist and digital illustrator living in Toronto. He is the founder and lead artist at Lamin Illustration & Design, a group that “specializes in creating conceptual fantasy art for film, television, apparel, books and other related merchandise.” Lamin has worked on projects for HBO’s Game of Thrones series, as well as several independent game studios.

In addition to his professional work, Lamin also creates creature and character drawings based solely off his own designs. These drawings come in the form of graphite pencil sketches and beautifully realized digital paintings. Lamin uses 2H leads along with a Staedtler Mars 780c lead holder and Staedtler 502 lead pointer tub to create his graphite drawings. His digital paintings are created on his iMac using a Cintiq 21UX tablet and Adobe Photoshop CS6.

One of my favorites aspects of Lamin’s graphite drawings (and his digital paintings to a lesser degree), is that they show the movement of the artist’s hand. You can see the rough strokes of graphite that went down before he finalized each line, making each drawing a window into Lamin’s creative process.
