Pencil Artist of the Week: Roudy Courser
This week’s featured pencil artist creates sketches of something very dear to my heart: classic Volkswagen vehicles. And, being that I spent a majority of my Saturday this weekend helping a friend pick out the latest addition to his VW family, this week’s post is particularly well-timed. The artist’s name is Roudy Courser, but he goes by the DeviantArt handle SketchyVWs, and his Volkswagen sketches are, in my humble opinion, freaking awesome.
Roudy’s DeviantArt gallery features sketches of everything from the iconic Type 1 (Beetle) and Type 2 (Bus), to the short-lived Thing and the homebrewed BugBus. The drawings are quite detailed, so detailed, in fact, that Volkswagen aficionados would be able to decipher the manufacturing period of each vehicle based solely on the drawings.

Roudy uses Derwent Graphic pencils 2H – 9B & Acid Free heavyweight paper to create his drawings. He received his artistic training at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California.
Why VWs, you ask?
“I eat, sleep and dream of classic VWs. My daily driver is ‘Belle’, a 1967 Beetle or Bug. No matter if it’s a short hop to the shop or an hour up to Dublin. This iconic time travelling machine puts a smile on my face every time.
As I hope my different sketches can ‘time travel’ you back to a time that you first encountered one of these beautiful machines. They tie us to people, places and great memories.
My inspiration comes from all the different classic VW models, 1930’s to 1970’s. And with such a wide variety it doesn’t take long to find something to draw. Organic lines and forms that are rolling works of art.”
If you would like to see more of Roudy’s work, you can check out his DeviantArt profile here. You can also purchase prints of his drawings on his website.
