Sketched, Not Stirred: Drink and Draw
Drink and Draw
There are a lot of things NOT to do when you’ve been drinking – things like driving, going to work, or calling an ex. Fortunately, drawing is not one of those sober-only activities. In bars across the country, artists are meeting up to drink, draw and share in the creative experience. Pabst Blue Ribbon has initiated the Drink and Draw movement, in which bars host events for artists that include deals on food and drinks, and a little something art-related, and bars in Brooklyn have started organizing their own meetups. Sometimes it’s drawing lessons, sometimes nude models for figure drawing, and sometimes it’s just space for artists to gather and do what they do best.
Drink and Draw and other events like it are, at their essence, a social club for artists over the age of 21. The benefits abound! If you’re in a rut, sometimes the best thing to restore your creative mojo is a change of scenery. Getting out of the house or studio can work wonders. It’s also a great opportunity to network with fellow members of the local art community. There’s the potential to forge friendships as well as professional relationships, to learn from one another and collaborate. Finally, there’s cheap food and drinks to consider – starving artists, starve no more!
If you’re under 21 or just don’t drink, don’t feel left out. You can definitely steal the basic premise of Drink and Draw. You can host your own social club for artists at a coffee shop, cafe, or pizza parlor. As the weather gets nicer, you can even take it to the park, throw down a blanket or beach towel, and draw in the sun. Some of my best memories in college involve gathering on the lawn with a group of friends, pooling our snacks, and drawing in between studying for finals. Just don’t forget to bring sunscreen!
To participate in Drink and Draw, stock up on drawing supplies, then just Google “Drink and draw [your area]” to find listings for events near you. If you’re in my area, maybe I’ll see you there!
