Pencil Artist of the Week: Darrell Edwards

This week’s pencil artist of the week is Darrell Edwards. A big fan of typography, Darrell uses pocket notebooks to sketch out and draw some interesting typography.
The pocket sized works of art are very well done. Here’s a little bio about Darrell Edwards:

I’m a Creative Director at a small marketing firm and photographer in St. john’s Newfoundland. When i was in design school 15 years ago i became the largest Type nerd ever. being able to express emotion with something most people don’t even think about is incredible. And more recently i’ve been playing with some hand lettering.

When i’m designing logo’s or working on brands, have always started with pencil on paper. Its so easy to let your mind wander on paper and work out problems before you get to the computer. Creating on command for clients can be a huge brain drain, so on my down time i find it really satisfying to take a quote, or a song lyric and work it out with type doodles in my pocket notebooks. Designing just for the fun of it is something that creatives don’t take enough time to do. I find it keeps my hands and brain limber, so i’ve been trying to work it back into my routine wherever i can.

I love starting a fresh pocket notebook, and i used to get really up tight about all of those clean pages until i was listening to a podcast called “back to work” by Dan Benjamin and Merlin Mann ( http://5by5.tv/b2w/247 – thats the episode). Merlin explained the way he uses his notebooks for productivity in his life, and one of the huge tidbits i took from that was writing “the first page is always profound” on the front of every notebook. the idea is that once you have christened it, you don’t have to be so paralyzed by your notebook’s newness anymore – I try to do it differently every time, and after thats done the notebook feels like it’s ready to dig into.

Here are a few pages from his pocket notebooks!

I’m for sure trying the First Page approach. It’s seems an ideal way of dealing with the paralyzing whiteness of it all.
    And, Great notebook art!

The same with any clean, virgin piece of paper. Sometimes my fear is cost or “last piece” related. I find that if I at LEAST make the first brushstroke on my watercolor paper (even small and light), it’s like breaking through an iron gate! We humans are odd ducks, aren’t we?
