Pencil Artist of the Week: Arunava Bid

,
Pencil Artist Arunava Bid

This week’s featured pencil artist is Arunava Bid, a pencil artist from India who recently entered into the world of hyper-realistic pencil art. He posted his first hyper-realistic pencil drawing, titled “Prayer of an old man,” in July of 2014. He has since refined his technique, getting better and better with each subsequent piece.

Arunava gave us some details on his creative process and what motivates him as an artist:

“I am not a professional artist, by profession I am an accountant. Drawing is my hobby and I am a totally a self taught artist. When I was in school my talent of drawing was concentrated only on my biology drawing book, but now it’s getting some motivation and I am drawing again to express myself and for happiness. I love to draw portraits of faces, ‘cause every face has its own story.

I am mainly a traditional artist, but I tried some digital drawing on MS Paint software by using mouse pointer. For traditional drawing, I use Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth 1500 Graphite pencils, Derwent Charcoal Pencils, Cretacolor blending stumps, Conté à Paris white pencils, Micron Pigma pens, Cretacolor Kneaded Erasers, Apsara Non-dust synthetic erasers, Camlin 0.5 mechanical pencils and Brustro 200gsm sketching and drawing paper.”

If I had to choose one word to describe Arunava’s drawings, it would be “texture.” From soft fur to weathered skin, Arunava’s focus seems to be on creating realistic textures and building the rest of the drawing around them.
