The Blackwing 602 in Action
The Blackwing 602 in Action
It makes our day when fans take the time to send in positive feedback about our pencils. But what we received from Jon Streeter recently is tough for us to put in words. So instead, we’ll use his words:

…You’ll notice the logo at the top left corner, “Off the Cuff Ink,” which I thought up because my preferred medium is pen and ink. However, these Blackwings are so much fun to use and make such a nice dark mark, that I’ve been carried away with them and instead of making a sketch intended to be inked in later, I’ve been making finished drawings with the Blackwings. I don’t even use my kneadable art eraser because the eraser on the Blackwings has been serving my purpose so well. I should note that there are a lot (as in “a LOT”) of erasures on this drawing, and if you look for them carefully, there they are. But with the squared-off edges on the Blackwing erasers, it’s really easy to make precise corrections.
The original Palomino Blackwing has a darker mark and is buttery smooth and I’ve made some other cartoons with that pencil; but right after I’d done them, a small set of Tombow pencils came in, and I darkened them both with the Tombow 6B, so they wouldn’t serve as testimonials to the Blackwing.
Your new Blackwing 602 is wonnnnnnnnnnderfullllll. I’ve heard other writers talk about the slightly waxy feel of the EB Blackwing. I’m not sure I know what they mean. What I do know is that the feel of the lead in your new 602 as it moves across the paper is like no other pencil I can think of except the original EB Blackwing, and I can state that with confidence, because I have one of the original 602s in my box of pens and pencils, and I just tried them right now, and they are so close as to be virtually identical, if not absolutely identical. Your company has done a tremendous service to the pencil fans out here, and I hope you recoup your R&D many, many times over.
Tell the whole team — scientists, technicians, and whoever decided to just go ahead and do it — THANKS!!”Jon StreeterLadera Ranch, CA

You’ll notice in Jon’s cartoon that he used the Blackwing 602 for the entire drawing. Even we had to do a double take because some of the lines and lettering looked so dark. Furthermore, you’ll note that the Blackwing didn’t need to be sharpened the entire time. Thanks for sharing this with us Jon, and for allowing us to share this with our readers.
