Does Chaos Breed Creativity?

Three scientifically valid experiments were conducted to see the affects of chaotic surroundings on peoples’ decisions and ideas. This study is not proposing that disorganized people have these characteristics, but is focused on when an individual is placed in the setting. The intention of the experiment designers was to determine what qualities were valuable for each situation, seeing as society has not completely abolished chaos or neatness. Ergo, both must have their perks.

While formulating new ideas, let messiness reign

Overwhelming evidence from the first study sub-set suggested that when placed in a disorganized setting, people came up with more creative ideas. Physical disorder does promote a much higher level of innovative, unconventional and original creation of ideas and products.

A tidy room leads to valuing charity

A second investigation on the topic showed that those in an orderly setting swayed towards conventionalism, made healthier food choices and were willing to be more generous in donating. It is tempting to say that perhaps more charitable people were being tested, but samples were random and spread across multiple cultures, ages and educational backgrounds.

How to attract people in both settings

The third study detailed who is drawn to what type of design when in a chaotic or non-chaotic region. When confronted with chaotic signs in a business, people surrounded by messiness had a greater tendency to gravitate towards a cramped or handwritten font/advertising than those in a well-organized setting. Those in chaotic rooms scored much higher in having an appreciation for novelty. People immersed in an orderly setting had an affinity towards classic and plain design, supporting simplicity.
