How to Sharpen Pencils

How to Sharpen PencilsWell folks, we just finished up an intense movie award season, from the Oscars to the Golden Globes, to the Independent Spirit Awards and every professional film-making guild under the sun. I fully admit to not having seen any of those films nominated for the big awards this year, and as such did not participate in this year’s Oscar predictions, (next winter, Poirier, it’s on) but right about now Tinsel Town and the assorted powers that be are stowing the ball gowns, rolling up the red carpets, and resuming whatever passes for normalcy in Hollywood.

But not so fast, folks. There’s another awards battle on the horizon, and this time, there’s one contender that the entire Pencils.com family is rallying behind.

How to Sharpen Pencils Goes for the Diagram Prize

The nominees for the 35th Annual Diagram Prize, given to the oddest book-title of the year and chosen by the good people at the publishing industry periodical Bookseller, were announced on February 22nd. Our favorite pencil-sharpening guru, David Rees, has made the short-list of nominees with his epic, genre-defining tome, “How to Sharpen Pencils.”

Rees will be facing stiff competition from some worthy adversaries, including “How Tea Cosies Changed the World” and “Lofts of North America: Pigeon Lofts,” with the winner decided by an online vote at WeLoveThisBook.com. However, perhaps Rees has the inside track, as award administrator Phillip Stone of Bookseller admitted himself that “How to Sharpen Pencils” is his own personal favorite.

Alas, vox populi, vox dei, so if you want to David Rees claim the top spot with his literary masterpiece, cast those votes as soon as you can and keep a sharp eye out for the announcement of the victor on Friday, March 22nd. There is no monetary award associated with the Diagram Prize, just increased publicity for one’s book, entrance into the illustrious hall of winners (which I don’t recommend reading at work, unless you wish to attract every one of your coworkers, including the telecommuters, to your desk with your whoops of laughter), and the warm glow of knowing that, when it comes to being an oddball, you are among the best.

You can check out our interview with David Rees, watch the Art Directors Club’s how-to video with the Sultan of the Sharpening, or pick up your own copy of “How to Sharpen Pencils” here at Pencils.com. Big things are in store for this petite paperback – you should probably get your hands on a copy now. And for the love of pencils, make sure you get out there and Vote! Vote! Vote!
