The domain “Pencils.com” is registered by the Incense Cedar Institute, a manufacturers association of producers of incense cedar lumber. The website, known as “The Incense Cedar Institute – Pencil Pages,” is established to provide educational information to teachers, students and parents about the production of wood-cased pencils.
2002 - 2003
Despite years of inactivity, Pencils.com is still a frequently visited, go-to source for information about high-quality pencils. Increasing email inquiries from teachers and parents asking where they could find good quality pencils would pave the way for the development of the California Republic Stationers and Palomino lines of pencils.

The Pencil World Creativity Shop launches on eBay, marking the first time Palomino pencils are sold online. This Ebay shop would serve as the impetus for adding an e-commerce component to Pencils.com.

Discussions begin surrounding a redesign/rebrand of Pencils.com into an e-commerce/social platform where visitors can “Shop, Create and Learn.”

“The Incense Cedar Institute – Pencil Pages” is rebranded to Pencils.com. An e-commerce component is added to the site, allowing visitors to learn about pencils and shop on one site.

The Pencils.com Facebook Page is launched, marking our first entry into the social sphere.

The Palomino Blackwing is launched exclusively on Pencils.com. When the Palomino Blackwing 602 and Palomino Blackwing Pearl launched in the following years, it would be to a much larger audience.

Pencils.com ships its first donation to the Kids in Need Foundation and Operation International Children. Today, 5% of every dollar spent on Pencils.com is donated as gifts in kind to programs around the world.

Palomino and Pencils.com officially split into two separate divisions, forming the wholesale and retail (respectively) pillars of the CalCedar pencil business.

Palomino hosts the first ever “Party for the Pencil” at the Art Directors Club in New York. The Pencils Blog covers the event.

Pencils.com receives an extensive redesign with a fresh, responsive layout. The new design emphasizes a simplified shopping experience, regardless of device.
