Pencil Artist of the Week: Scarlett Royale

Drawings by Scarlett Royale

This week’s featured artist is Scarlett Royale, a photographer, crafter and pencil artist from the United States. Scarlett creates drawings using a variety of techniques, but two techniques stood out to me while I was browsing her gallery: stippling and the use of negative space.

Stippling is the process of creating an image or shape using small dots. Scarlett creates her stippled drawings using a combination of markers and color pencils, and the results are astounding. She also has a knack for making the most out of negative space, or the space around/between the subjects of a drawing. You can see examples of both techniques in the drawings below.

When it comes to pencils, Scarlett sticks with Prismacolors. When asked, why, her response was simple: they’ve never let her down.

“Pencils are my preference to work, [I’m] not much of a painter. I tend to use Prismacolor Colored Pencils and not much else. They are my favorite and [I] have not had the success that I have had using any other brand.”

If you’d like to see more of Scarlett’s work, you can check out her DeviantArt profile here. Scarlett also creates adorable knitted creatures out of yarn (take a minute to check them out, I promise you won’t be disappointed.).
